Landscape Designer, Nursery or the Gardener

Landscape designer, Nursery or the gardener

If you are thinking about starting a landscape project for your home, it would be a good idea to ask for help.  Some individuals are capable of visualizing their future landscape but lack the experience to develop an idea into reality. Others may have the physical strength to plant trees, bushes and flowers, but can not conceptualize what a good landscape design should be for their home.  Many people have watched home gardening shows on television and think it is easy.

I have been creating and installing landscape designs for homes in Nassau County and Suffolk County for over 30 years. I am still amazed at the complexity involved in making a practical, attractive and affordable landscape design that will thrive throughout the seasons and years to come.

Drive around your neighborhood and take notice of the existing landscapes. Most are overgrown. The average plant has been sheared and contorted. Most are very linear and are boring. Who was responsible for this mess? The landscape designer, the contractor or the gardener?

The Gardener or Landscaper are usually in charge of maintaining your landscape but potentially have not been trained in design. Most do a wonderful job of cutting your lawn. The landscape contractor can be a good resource and should be thought of to provide labor and expertise in landscape installation. The landscape designer is typically the creative engine behind the project. A good design however must not only consider beauty. A good design should be attractive, practical and easy to maintain.

I have found a great benefit in combining landscape designer, contractor and nursery into one package. Showing plants to clients in advance  and creating computer images makes the design process easy. I am able to present a design and explain how it should be maintained. The client is always involved in the design process and usually is amazed in the transformation of their home landscape project.

So do not be afraid of asking for landscape design help. If you would like your home landscape to be special and outstanding, resist going to the local nursery and picking plants without knowing their placement.  Landscapes by Lee Itzler is available to help you.
