Should all the plants in your garden be evergreen?  Should all the plants in your garden create a flower?

Creating a landscape design for your home can be difficult. When you begin to create a planting plan for your home, the temptation is to select plants that will flower at the time of purchase. This impulse buying is accountable for the billions of out of place plants, shrubs and trees in suburban gardens.  If the focus of a landscape design hinges on a flower that may only be there for a week, the garden design will no doubt be boring the rest of the year.

A landscape designer for home landscaping should consider many things when selecting plant material. Follow this list for better results with planting design:

1)    How will new plants relate to the architecture and existing conditions?

2)    What form and shape will the plants develop into without harsh pruning?

3)    What texture will the plants have and how will the textures relate to each other?

4)    What will the balance be between evergreens and flowering plant?

Keep in mind that evergreens such as cedar, spruce and cypress do not have to be green. Many dwarf conifers that are suitable for Long Island planting design are available in shades of green, yellow and blue. Use these varieties to create year round interest and generate curb appeal for your landscape design.
